Taiji fishermen clamp down as more Risso's dolphins are killed
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Cove Guardians are reporting that Taiji fishermen in Japan employed further techniques last night in an attempt to cover up the slaughter of yet another pod of Risso's dolphins. Warning: Graphic images.
In the Livestream report filmed yesterday by SSCS Cove Guardians, Cove Guardian leader Melissa Sehgal said that dolphin hunters had implemented extra measures in an attempt to block their slaughtering activity from being filmed.
Sehgal described how dolphin hunters deployed extra nets to keep the dolphins in an area that afforded minimal public view. Additional tarps she said, were also thrown up within the cove itself, and then draped outside of the butcher house to shield the dolphin meat buyers from view.
Given the criticism leveled over the extra brutality of dolphin drives this season, the attempt at secrecy is not difficult to understand. But for workers with Taiji's Isana Fisheries Association, the strange perception appears to be what cannot be seen, did not happen.
Unfortunately for 13-15 Risso's dolphins driven into the cove on November 18, it did happen. The dolphins were dragged under the tarps that hide the killing zone and slaughtered one at a time. In the panic that ensued, one terrified marine mammal attempted to escape but never made it. He drowned in the net that separated him from the open ocean instead:
But what happened after the slaughter had concluded, was so bizarre, that it attracted rather than distracted one's attention away from the bodies being hauled to the butcher house:
Cove Guardians then managed to track a meat purchase by a local Taiji buyer and continued to film as dolphin intestines were chopped up on the dirty floor of a nearby garage; blood poured out of the drain.
Sehgal said of the graphic images captured, "A family of beautiful Risso's dolphins swimming free this morning and then 3 hours later ... what I saw with my own eyes while Livestreaming today from Taiji:"
The Taiji dolphin hunt season begins on September 1 and ends in March. According to Ceta-Base.com, since the season began, a total of 445 dolphins from four species have been driven into the cove in Taiji, Japan.
The hunt is conducted by a small group of fishermen with just 12 boats from the Wakayama Prefecture of Japan. Captured dolphins are either sold to marine mammal parks around the world or slaughtered for meat.
