Amazon holds quarter of entertainment market
The online retailer reported an increased market share of 26.3% in Q4 last year, according to new research
Amazon sales accounted for more than €1 in every €4 spent on entertainment during Q4 last year, according to market research.
The online retailer reported an increased market share of 26.3% for the period ending 22 December – a 5.9% percentage point growth compared to 2012.
The launch of new “Next Gen” consoles, such as the PS4 and Xbox One, helped to boost Game Group’s market share by 2.3p% as customers flocked to stores to buy hit software titles such as FIFA 14 and Call of Duty: Ghosts for their new machines.
Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda all reported increases of less than 1%, contributing to an overall supermarket share of 33.3%, up 1.2% from the same period last year.
Games did particularly well following the launch of the new Next Gen consoles, claiming 30% of PS4 and Xbox One games sales and gaining €12m from winning shoppers from other retailers.
Over €5m of this was taken from the supermarkets which didn’t perform as strongly in Next Gen games sales despite achieving a high share in the overall games market.
This is a clear sign that consumers still require advice and support when shopping for technical products and retailers should try to make the most of this opportunity.
Other companies did not perform so well in the rankings over the key Christmas period.
Despite HMV accounting for 1 in 6 entertainment purchases made in Q4, the retailer’s overall market share during the period fell by 8.5% to 12.5%. The company was acquired by Hilco UK earlier in 2013 for an est. €60m, after the firm went into administration at the start of the year.
iTunes Music reported a marginal increase of just 0.1%.
Video was the most gifted entertainment product despite the market facing a heavy annual decline of 22%. Family movie Despicable Me 2 was the most popular, closely followed by Monsters University and hit TV series Breaking Bad.
