This little bird has been sitting outside my window most of the morning "One mm closer and I peck your head clean off!" A sweet little emu. My husband wanted to throw out this old kitchen cabinet. But i stripped it down, and refinished it and painted an oriental bird on it. I was inspired to paint the bird from a retro post card.

So, for my final photo of 2008, here's an American coot from yesterday, cruising the Wharfinger waterfront. beautiful 75 degrees, a little breezy, no white stuff anywhere, just green, lots of birds, nature at it's best  :) Same grebe looking smug after catching and gulping down a fingerling about twice as long as its beak. South end of a north-bound grebe down at the Wharfinger waterfront. Red-shouldered hawk perching near the foot of Del Norte St. Second time in a week I've spotted it. This crow-sized hawk and a somewhat smaller American kestrel hang around a lot in this area. Must be someone's pet. Left a message with the Dept. of Environmental conservation, SPCA told me to call them. If you look carefully you can see the blue twitter bird mascot/logo. Sweet. The raven in my new background is staring down the Twitter bird. I wonder who will win. Just for grins, here's another robin that perched outside my kitchen window a couple of days before Thanksgiving. Around dusk today my yard suddenly filled up with dozens of robins. A quartet of marbled godwits were probing the verge at the Adorni Center today. Here, one is caught in the act of gulping down an earthworm while two of its fellows look on. Western grebe resting in the sheltered waters along the Wharfinger waterfront. Common loon fishing for tiny crabs along the Wharfinger waterfront. Lovely nights sleep, woke up to a welcome blue sky :) Last September I caught a Brown Pelican on final approach to a piling along the Wharfinger waterfront. Wigeons still hangin' around down by Truesdale St. Better light today but they were much farther away, so photos still marginal.
