On Victory Drive, Soldiers Defeated by Debt
http://www.propublica.org/article/on-victory-drive-soldiers-defeated-by-debt
Seven years after Congress banned payday-loan companies from charging exorbitant interest rates to service members, many of the nation's military bases are surrounded by storefront lenders who charge high annual percentage rates, sometimes exceeding 400 percent.
The Military Lending Act sought to protect service members and their families from predatory loans. But in practice, the law has defined the types of covered loans so narrowly that it's been all too easy for lenders to circumvent it.
"We have to revisit this," said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., who chairs the defense appropriations subcommittee and is the Senate's se...

[VIDEO] Ríos Montt Guilty of Genocide: Are Guatemalan President Pérez Molina, U.S. Officials Next? 1 of 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Gn5ay-L2xfM
Published on May 13, 2013
http://www.democracynow.org - In a historic verdict, former U.S.-backed Guatemalan dictator Efraín Ríos Montt has been sentenced to 80 years in prison after being found guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity. Ríos Montt was convicted of overseeing the slaughter of more than 1,700 people in Guatemala's Ixil region after seizing power in 1982. The ruling marks the first time a former head of state had been found guilty of genocide in his own country. The judge in the case has instructed prosecutors to launch an immediate investigation of...

Occupy the Farm movement rises again, hours after being raided
http://grist.org/news/occupy-the-farm-movement-rises-again-hours-after-being-raided/
A guerrilla veggie-growing occupation of university-owned land in Albany, Calif., was busted by cops early Monday and thousands of zucchini, kale, squash, and other newly planted seedlings were plowed over. But the occupiers proved more resilient than a sprawling mint plant, returning Monday to replant the desecrated farm.
More than 100 activists had gathered at Gill Tract, near Berkeley, on Friday and over the weekend, with some staying on site until the Monday morning raid. They pulled weeds, tilled soil, and planted seedlings. Some pitched tents.

Mo. House Passes Paycheck Deception, but Veto Expected
http://www.aflcio.org/Blog/In-The-States/Mo.-House-Passes-Paycheck-Deception-but-Veto-Expected
The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), its corporate backers and extremist Missouri lawmakers may have won the first round in their drive to silence working people with a paycheck deception bill, when the House gave it final approval (86-69) earlier this week.
But thanks to a strong mobilization by Missouri working families and their unions and allies, the close vote—that included several Republicans who voted against the bill—means that Gov. Jay Nixon’s (D) expected veto cannot be overridden. It takes a two-thirds majority vote to override...

Everything Is Rigged, Continued: European Commission Raids Oil Companies in Price-Fixing Probe
http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/blogs/taibblog/everything-is-rigged-continued-european-commission-raids-oil-companies-in-price-fixing-probe-20130515
We're going to get into this more at a later date, but there was some interesting late-breaking news yesterday.
According to numerous reports, the European Commission regulators yesterday raided the offices of oil companies in London, the Netherlands and Norway as part of an investigation into possible price-rigging in the oil markets. The targeted companies include BP, Shell and the Norweigan company Statoil. The Guardian explains that officials believe that oil companies colluded to manipulate pricing data:
The commission said the alleged price collusion, which may hav...

Central Park West Mansion Returns Hoping for $37 Million
http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2013/05/08/central_park_west_mansion_returns_hoping_for_37_million.php
The mansion at 247 Central Park West has had a rocky relationship with the real estate market in the past: former owner and Coach COO Keith Monda once wanted $32 million for the place but had to cut that price all the way to $22.375 million before selling the house early last year. The buyer is making no particular attempt to learn from Monda's example—he or she (masked by a corporation) has just listed the house for $37 million. The annual taxes add another $44,000 to that.
Before Monda owned it, the mansion, on the park at West 85th Street, belonged to Abigail Disney (grandniece of Walt). And long before th...

Who Can Stop the Koch Brothers From Buying the Tribune Papers? Unions Can, and Should
http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/blogs/taibblog/who-can-stop-the-koch-brothers-from-buying-the-tribune-papers-unions-can-and-should-20130510
A few weeks ago, we did a story about hedge fund king Dan Loeb's plans to address a conference of institutional investors and perhaps solicit new clients among the public retirement funds in attendance, despite his involvement with a political lobbying group that campaigns against those very types of defined benefit plans. When stories by Rolling Stone, Washington Monthly and the New York Post came out about Loeb's affiliations, Loeb canceled his scheduled speech at the Conference of Institutional Investors and fled the event, reinforcing the simple idea that powerful interests can...
