Masseto’s name derives from the Italian word massi, which means large rocks, in reference to the hard clods of gray clay that form in the soil. Rich in Pliocene clays, this kind of soil is unique in Bolgheri and is ideal for Merlot.

Grapes for #Ornellaia are hand harvested and then selected manually on a double sorting table. The different grapes and different parcels are vinified separately and then undergo 12 months aging in barriques, 70% new and 30% used once before. After this, the wine is assembled and goes back into barriques for another six months.
