In #Congo’s massive southern province of Katanga, the IRC's community-driven reconstruction program, ‘Tuungane,’ has been in place since 2007. Josephine Selembe, who was part of her community's decision-making committee under the Tuungane framework, inspects the huge market the community built. When it opens, she and other women will be able to sell products locally, rather than carry merchandise on their heads for many miles to the next town. Josephine hopes this will also boost local economy by attracting buyers from the entire region. (Photo: Sinziana Demian/IRC).

A girl dances across a new footbridge in the rural Mutare district of eastern #Zimbabwe. Before the bridge was built, local children had to wade across the river to get to school – a dangerous trip when the water level was high. When the IRC brought local leaders from opposing political parties together to choose the projects that would benefit their community the most, a new bridge topped their combined list. Now as many as 1,000 people a day can safely cross the river – no longer cut off from their school and health clinic and other vital services. Happy New Year from all of us at the IRC! May #2012 be filled with peace, joy & renewal. (A girl celebrates the New Roots Drew Gardens' first growing season during a Harvest Festival organized by the IRC in New York in conjunction with Phipps Community Development Corporation. While some refugees use the New Roots garden as a resource to stock their kitchens, others just enjoy the break from city life the green space provides. Photo: Lily Solmssen/The IRC.)

Eastern #Rwanda: #Children dance during an activity with an IRC DJ at the Kirehe Open Day, an exhibition for local businesses and non-profits. The DJ, who played songs with community health messages, was very popular, particularly among the children. Some of the kids are wearing reflective vests provided by the local police to make them visible to cars when walking to school in the dark. (Photo: Georgia Travers/IRC) More on our work in Rwanda:

Photos: The IRC's Mathilde Dubois spoke with a butcher at the market in Kouibly in western #IvoryCoast. He told her that meat prices have gone up because of the increased transport costs of getting the meat to market. This has affected business - fewer people have been buying meat and are relying on other staples instead.

The IRC is scaling up relief efforts in both #IvoryCoast & #Liberia. With funding from the Netherlands Refugee Foundation (Stichting Vluchteling), the IRC has flown in 12 tons of emergency supplies from Rotterdam and is commencing distribution of the materials. The supplies, aimed at helping more than 43,000 displaced people in the western district of Man, include water purification tablets, sanitation materials and plastic sheets for protection from the rain. This is a photo of IRC staff offloading a truck with water treatment materials in a temporary depot at the IRC's Man office. You can read more at
