As part of a new national campaign by the national AFL-CIO, a new ad is now airing in Wisconsin featuring “The Koch Sisters”.

As ABC News reported: “Joyce and Karen Koch aren’t related to each other. Walker Rejects Low-Wage Workers’ Living Wage Complaint

http://wisaflcio.typepad.com/wisconsin-state-afl-cio-blog/2014/10/walker-rejects-living-wage-complaint.html

Yesterday, the Walker Administration dismissed an official living wage complaint filed with the Department of Workforce Development by over 100 low-wage Wisconsin workers. Wisconsin law states that the minimum wage "shall be no less than a living wage." The law sets forth a complaint process which includes the opportunity of a Wage Advisory Council that can make recommendations to the Governor on an appropriate, livable wage rate.

Commonsense economics tells us that $7.25, or $15,080, a year is not enough for a worker to live on...

Beyond The Umbrella Revolution: Hong Kong's Struggle With Inequality In 8 Charts

http://www.forbes.com/sites/liyanchen/2014/10/08/beyond-the-umbrella-revolution-hong-kongs-struggle-with-inequality-in-8-charts/

While the world has focused on Hong Kong’s demand for democracy and universal suffrage, the protests highlight the widening economic divide for the city of 7 million residents in recent years. We have yet to see how the political impasse unfolds, as student leaders and the government are expected to start formal talks on Friday. But from increasing income disparity to lofty housing prices, the city is facing various economic challenges as pressing as the political ones.

1. Rising Income Inequality...

Comedian comes to 'flip a district'

http://www.mndaily.com/blogs/newsstand/2014/10/07/comedian-comes-flip-district

Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher brought the acerbic humor to Northfield, Minnesota for a “town hall” at the Grand Event Center on Tuesday, Northfield News reported.

The untelevised live forum was focused on the environment, student debt and Northfield’s U.S. Rep. John Kline, R-Minn. Last month on Maher’s HBO show “Real Time,” Kline won a competition in which viewers voted for a member of Congress they would most like to see unelected...

A Union County

https://www.jacobinmag.com/2014/10/a-union-county/

Labor in Lorain County, Ohio is challenging Democrats and putting solidarity into practice.

On Labor Day weekend, with thousands spread out across the lawn that fronts the Black River in downtown Lorain, Ohio, the president of the county AFL-CIO, Harry Williamson, glowingly introduced Tim Carrion, a leader in the city’s large Latino community. Carrion then took the stage and announced he was running for mayor in the 2015 election to bring “new leadership, new ideas, and a vision of solidarity.”...

Remember Our Syrian Allies

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/04/opinion/remember-our-syrian-allies.html?_r=0

President Obama made the right decision to boost military aid to moderate Syrian rebels last year, but today America’s approach to attacking Islamic State fighters risks undermining the moderate opposition and alienating support among the Syrian public.

Last Friday, for the first time I can recall, opponents of the government of President Bashar al-Assad burned an American flag, and anti-American demonstrations mushroomed across opposition-held areas in Syria. These people have no love for the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, but this means something went seriously wrong with our initial campaign of airstrikes...

Syrian Rebels Seize Russian Spy Station Near Israeli Border

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/10/07/syrian-rebels-seize-russian-spy-station-near-israeli-border.html

When the Free Syrian Army pushed Assad’s soldiers out of a town south of Damascus, the last thing they expected to find was a Russian spy post, a few miles from the Golan Heights.

Syrian rebels have overtaken a joint Russian-Syrian secret facility that they claim was a covert intelligence collection base. Opposition fighters say the post was used to snoop in on the communications of opposition groups -- and perhaps even the nearby Israelis...

Will Capitalism Survive its Growing Wealth Gap?

http://www.thesocialist.us/will-capitalism-survive-its-growing-wealth-gap/

The Occupy movement that started in 2011 focused attention on the gap between the “1 percent,” who hold most wealth and power, and the “99 percent” who don’t. A book by Thomas Piketty, the French economist, has provided data and proposals to continue and to focus this discussion.

Piketty’s work has been widely acclaimed. He has spoken to the U.S. President’s Council of Economic Advisors and given a talk at the International Monetary Fund. What he writes is in tune with President Obama’s statement that inequality is “the defining challenge of our age.” It was the Occupy movement that changed the discussion in the U.S. after the 2008 financial collapse, from “How capitalism helps us all,” to “How capitalism divides us increasingly into haves and have-nots.” It was the Occupy movement that created an environment in which Thomas Piketty can be received like a rock star...
