McDonald's Corp. more than tripled the pay packages last year for its new CEO Don Thompson and the man he replaced, Jim Skinner.

The pay increases came at a challenging time for the world's biggest hamburger chain. McDonald's is facing intensifying competition, a trend toward healthier eating and weak economic conditions in many countries where it operates.

12 Elizabeth Warren Quotes to Prepare You for Her Appearance at the AFL-CIO National Convention

http://www.aflcio.org/Blog/Other-News/12-Elizabeth-Warren-Quotes-to-Prepare-You-for-Her-Appearance-at-the-AFL-CIO-National-Convention

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) will be one of the keynote speakers at the AFL-CIO 2013 National Convention in Los Angeles from Sept. 8–11. Here are 12 key quotes from her that show why she is a champion of the 99%.

1. “There is nobody in this country who got rich on their own. Nobody. You built a factory out there—good for you. But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn't have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory....Now look. You built a factory and it turned into something terrific or a great idea—God bless! Keep a hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.”—September 2011...

Use of Chemical Weapons is Inexcusable

http://www.ituc-csi.org/syria-use-of-chemical-weapons-is

Local hospitals have informed Médecins Sans Frontières that around 3,600 people have been treated for apparent neurotoxic symptoms, and that 355 of them have died.

“This is the fourth, and most serious use of chemical weapons in the Syrian conflict. While the Assad regime delayed approval for the UN inspection visit, the UN team should try to establish the full facts of the deployment of these horrific weapons, including any indications as to who carried out the attack,” said ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow...

In a state with high voter turnout, a GOP bill targets early voting

http://tv.msnbc.com/2013/08/07/new-wisconsin-voting-bills-target-elderly-early-voters/

While voting rights advocates have zeroed in on North Carolina where the governor is getting ready to sign a controversial voting law, Republicans in Wisconsin are readying their own voting overhaul.

The latest legislation comes from state Sen. Glenn Grothman who is pushing two bills to restrict early voting and a third that would reduce requirements on donor disclosures...

Word spreads fast about Occupy Madison's tiny houses for the homeless

http://host.madison.com/ct/news/local/writers/pat_schneider/word-spreads-fast-about-occupy-madison-s-tiny-houses-for/article_58d118a8-0ab2-11e3-a90d-001a4bcf887a.html

News about Occupy Madison’s "OM Build" Tiny Homes initiative is spreading like wildfire, generating excitement and attracting donors of time and money, says project organizer Bruce Wallbaum.

After news of homeless people beginning work on the first 98-square-foot house broke in early July, the initiative got its share of attention from local media. But a WMTV-15 story more than a month later — featuring video of the tiny house, nearly complete — sent coverage viral, Wallbaum recalls...

[VIDEO] On Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the Dignity of Work Remains a Common Goal

http://www.aflcio.org/Blog/Political-Action-Legislation/On-Anniversary-of-the-March-on-Washington-for-Jobs-and-Freedom-the-Dignity-of-Work-Remains-a-Common-Goal

Today, as thousands of people come to Washington, D.C., to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, we wanted to share a powerful quote from King on the dignity of work:

"So often we overlook the worth and significance of those who are not in professional jobs. Of those who are not in the so-called 'big jobs.' But let me say to you tonight, that whenever you are engaged in work that serves humanity and is for the building of humanity, it has dignity and it has worth."

Colombia Nationwide Strike Against 'Free Trade,' Privatization, Poverty

http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2013/08/25

Ignored by English-language media, rural uprisings spread across industries as hundreds of thousands protest US-backed govt

A nationwide strike in Colombia—which started as a rural peasant uprising and spread to miners, teachers, medical professionals, truckers, and students—reached its 7th day Sunday as at least 200,000 people blocked roads and launched protests against a U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement and devastating policies of poverty and privatization pushed by US-backed right-wing President Juan Manuel Santos.

"[The strike is a condemnation] of the situation in which the Santos administration has put the country, as a consequence of its terrible, anti-union and dissatisfactory policies," declared the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT), the country's largest union, in a statement...

ALPS filter off till at least September

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2013/08/26/national/alps-filter-off-till-at-least-september/#.UhwPjNKThoE

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday that one of two radioactive water filters will be shut until at least September at its stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, even as it searches for the cause of a leak that prompted the biggest escalation in the crisis since it started in March 2011.

The loss of the advanced liquid processing system, taken offline Aug. 8 due to corrosion, compounds concerns that the utility is losing its battle, now raging for two years, to manage the buildup of radioactive water. The lost layer of filtration adds to the contamination levels of water in the plant’s storage tanks, hundreds of which may be susceptible to leaks.

The Gang Rape Epidemic in India

http://newsjunkiepost.com/2013/08/24/the-gang-rape-epidemic-in-india/

The subjects of sex and property have nourished the Indian film industry for years. The female body has always been an object of gaze. Barring few notable exceptions, the stories are about a man in whose world a woman is but an accessory. The hero fights the battle and the heroine nurses the wound; the hero kills the villain and his woman submits her body and soul to him. They become block-busters, those harmless pieces of entertainment. “Let us watch it. So what if it is rubbish?” If this be the motto of our people, then I dare say: we are doomed. This sexist culture is reinforced by the Hollywood movies where the modern man finally finds his refuge, his model, his own image. Hollywood’s ability to detoxify every human experience is what appeals to us. The political is made apolitical and the anti-political, the dissenting, is turned into an object of ridicule. In our haste, we ignore the painful and honest voices. Our age admires the human-machine Arnold: his brick-like body, his machismo...

[VIDEO] Jindal: Racism persists because minorities cling to their heritage

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/08/25/jindal-racism-persists-because-minorities-cling-to-their-heritage/

Louisiana Gov. Bobbie Jindal (R) has blamed minorities who refuse to give up their “separateness” for the continuation of racism in America.

In a Politico op-ed marking the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, Jindal noted that racism was “one of the more tragic features of the human condition.”...
