[VIDEO] John Lydon on Russell Brand's call for revolution: 'The most idiotic thing I've ever heard'

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/video/2014/oct/15/john-lydon-russell-brand-revolution-video

Former Sex Pistol John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, tells Polly Toynbee that comedian Russell Brand's call for people not to vote is ignorant, flippant and liable to 'make you all homeless'. Lydon also explains why he'd never vote Conservative, labels Ukip 'morons' and calls anarchy a 'mind game for the middle classes'...

Occupy Directory

http://directory.occupy.net/

1518 OCCUPATIONS

The Occupy Directory began as public listing of all known Occupation sites built by and for the #Occupy movement. This expanded to include international movements also concerned with justice and equality. What began as listings mostly in the United States, grew to listings in over seventy (70) countries and every continent.

The aim of the Occupy Directory is to provide an easy and effective way for people to connect with one another and find entry points to engage with the world in a meaningful way...

ROPED OFF IN FERGUSON

http://interoccupy.net/blog/roped-off-in-ferguson/

The question is not whether the mayhem in Ferguson is being caused by a “”small”" group of discontents, or whether the other protestors are sincere in their wish for a peaceful solution. The question is why such discontent is no longer staying within the usual boundaries of home, bottle, and pipe. Why are the most desperate among us taking every opportunity to voice their discontent as often and as violently as possible?

The party is over. The well feds minority that have put this country into the hopper must back away from the trough. Address poverty and racism or bear the consequences; the violence that is endemic among the dispossessed survivors of eat-your-own capitalism will be in all our streets, all our homes, all our neighborhoods...

"It is Our Duty To Fight For Our Freedom" As Mass Arrests In Ferguson Continue

http://www.occupy.com/article/it-our-duty-fight-our-freedom-mass-arrests-ferguson-continue

Hundreds of people demonstrated in the pouring rain in the St. Louis area Monday, with many refusing to move from outside Ferguson police headquarters for a period of four hours — the same amount of time that 18-year-old Michael Brown’s body was left on the streets after being shot dead by an officer in August, sparking months of unrest.

The action was the latest in a “Weekend of Resistance” over the shooting of the Missouri teen. Activists have used demonstrations to renew calls for the prosecution of the white police officer who killed the black teenager...

More Clashes In Hong Kong Between Police, Pro-Democracy Protesters

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/10/15/356346515/more-clashes-in-hong-kong-between-police-pro-democracy-protesters

Hong Kong's police department says it is investigating reports of excessive use of force against pro-democracy demonstrators today following some of the most intense clashes since the protests ramped up last month.

As we reported earlier, in the past 24 hours "police [have] played a game of Whac-a-Mole with protesters. They cleared streets only to have protesters erect roadblocks elsewhere." They used pepper spray and batons, dragging off dozens of protesters who sought to set up roadblocks around an underpass near government headquarters, in the heart of the city's financial district. Authorities made 45 arrests for "unlawful assembly."...

Kentucky Debate: Grimes Has Jobs Plan, McConnell Defends Gridlock

http://www.aflcio.org/Blog/Political-Action-Legislation/Kentucky-Debate-Grimes-Has-Jobs-Plan-McConnell-Defends-Gridlock

Monday’s debate, between Alison Lundergan Grimes and Sen. Mitch McConnell in the race for McConnell’s U.S. Senate seat, “demonstrated the clear contrast, between Mitch McConnell, the self-proclaimed ‘guardian of gridlock,’ and Alison Lundergan Grimes, who offered sensible and compassionate responses coupled with an understanding of the challenges facing working Kentuckians,” said Kentucky State AFL-CIO President Bill Londrigan.

Londrigan said that instead of helping raise the wages of struggling Kentuckians...

6.8 Million Latino Workers

http://www.aflcio.org/Blog/Political-Action-Legislation/6.8-Million-Latino-Workers

This was a guest post authored by Kelly Fay Rodriguez, assistant to the executive vice president at the AFL-CIO, for the U.S. Department of Labor blog. During Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, the Labor Department is running a series of blog posts related to how it can help expand opportunity for more people in America. For real-time updates in Spanish, follow the department on Twitter and Facebook.

Hispanic Heritage Month offers a time to recognize the contributions of the nearly 53 million Hispanic workers living in the United States and to highlight the issues facing our community. One critical issue is the federal minimum wage. Every day, millions of Latinos go to work but struggle to support themselves and their families. Working with unions in the labor movement, we have seen the positive impact of fair wages on the lives of workers and their families. As a Latina advocate for workers I have witnessed the difference higher wages can make on living conditions for workers and on future opportunities for their children...

THE RISE OF CHINA’S WORKERS MOVEMENT

http://www.equaltimes.org/the-rise-of-china-s-workers?lang=en#.VD763vnF8Sy

In early September, about 16,000 workers at two Chinese factories producing touch-screens for well-known brands such as Apple went on strike after management reneged on a promise to pay a US$100 holiday bonus.

The strikes were quickly resolved but still hit the headlines in the West because the bonus was supposed to include a box of moon cakes, a traditional gift during the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. The New York Post issued a dire warning to Apple fans, “No cake, no iPhone 6!”...

UN Warning of Kobani Massacre Must be Heeded

http://www.ituc-csi.org/un-warning-of-kobani-massacre-must

The ITUC is calling upon the international community to act on UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s call to prevent a massacre in the town of Kobani, on the Syrian-Turkish border.

Kurdish fighters backed by US-led air strikes have so far prevented the so-called “Islamic State” from taking full control of the city. However, the Turkish government’s refusal to put the struggle against the Islamic jihadists ahead of its long-standing enmity with the Kurds risks leaving the remaining people in Kobani under the murderous control of IS...

http://wisaflcio.typepad.com/wisconsin-state-afl-cio-blog/2014/10/ready-for-round2.html

Wisconsin workers are ready to cheer on Mary Burke in the second debate match-up with Gov. Scott Walker. In the last debate, Walker proclaimed that $7.25 was a living wage, nothing would make him accept funds to expand BadgerCare and that taking collective bargaining rights away from workers was a good thing.

Watch parties are kicking off at 6:30 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 17, in Madison and Wisconsin Rapids. Debate starts promtly at 7:00 p.m...

[VIDEO] Scott Walker thinks minimum wage laws "don't serve a purpose"

http://wisaflcio.typepad.com/wisconsin-state-afl-cio-blog/2014/10/minwage.html

Scott Walker doesn’t care about people who work for a living. Today, Gov. Walker further showed his hostility towards laws that protect workers from abuse on the job. When asked about the minimum wage at a panel discussion with members of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Scott Walker said, “I don't think it serves a purpose.” Watch the video here.

Minimum wage laws guarantee a bare standard of living for workers and help keep workers from going hungry or being homeless. Without minimum wage laws, corporations can pay workers pennies for a hard day’s work...
