The approach to the topiary.

Not happy with the mouth, but this is my first attempt at doing anything like this. I'm usually a sketch person, after all.

This is my current piece of artwork at Stage 3. The hair has now been coloured and toned using a smudge tool to obliterate the graininess of the original cover pencil work; then a fine cover pencil in mid-brown adds feathering.
