'ashura was yesterday & i should've posted this pic then. luv the religious poster peeking thru the carcasses. 'ashura is a time when food is distributed in mosques or pubic places & many carcasses like these would go 2 make dishes that r given 2 family, friends & neighbours or needy ppl

not sure what made me want to have churros all of a sudden but i remembered i had a clip of turkish equivalent i had taken in gaziantep last year. love the dexterity of the guy although i have to say they were not as good as spanish churros. far too sweet!

which one do you fancy for lunch today? not quite how we buy our meat but often how gulf arabs do. to be truthful, it is more for special occasions that they buy live goats, lambs or camels to either butcher in a nearby slaughterhouse or at home.

the other day, i tasted a delicious carrot salad at the towpath made with different colour carrots they had bought from leila's cafe and it reminded me of these purple carrots i had seen for sale right on the pavement in gaziantep. in syria, they also have yellow ones which they stuff with rice and meat and cook in tomato sauce. i'll have to look for the picture of the syrian cored yellow carrots :)

i thought i didn't have a pic for today's global hand washing day then i remembered this extraordinarily primitive shower i snapped in a mountain encampment near maras (which is famous for its goat's milk salep ice cream) and i thought i'd post it. u must have many similar ones where you are. the people i visited had no running water, no electricity, nothing. and their houses were made of the bamboo reeds you see inside the shower covered with just hessian or plastic. marvelous place though with the most charming women, and men and children.

2day is international day of rural women & i thought i'd post this pic of a lovely young girl i came across out in the fields nr gaziantep. we'd stopped to see the dried peppers & i spotted their encampment in the distance. they were there 4 the summer, helping with the harvest & earning extra money, & the father had even set up a mini fountain 2 provide a little coolness. sweet family who invited us to share their delicious just-baked lavash bread & home-made cheese.
