Most of the land is below sea level, due to the intense pressure of the ice covering it. Most of the mass seen is ice over land, only the sections covered by the US overlay of TX and partly by MT are ice shelves.

Yeah it won't hurt if global warming takes out 2%. I'm okay with that, as long as it's for a good cause.

So in relation to my house... It's really really really big. Not just really big.
michaelocc on October 20, 2009
Interesting. Worth noting that you could also pretty much drop the entire US into the middle of Canada and it would look just as small by comparison: http://images107.fotki.com/v533/photos/4/44329/2027059/NorthAmerica-vi.jpg

Just reading "To the ends of the earth" by Ranulph Fiennes. The man who crossed the whole of that massive continent. I'm in total awe.

Antarctica has a surface area of about 14 million square kilometers (5.5 million square miles), making it the largest desert in the world.
monkeypunchers on October 20, 2009
So huge, yet there is not even one square inch that I would like to set foot on.

I assume this is the land mass, not including the ice in the winter-time which, I believe, nearly doubles the coastline.

When I was in 7th Grade, a "Geography" teacher marked me wrong on a test on the question of whether or not Antarctica was a continent. He insisted it wasn't, I said it was.
