They selected the soil for the rover to be one that behaves more or less the same on Earth as the stuff is doing for Spirit on Mars. Some things, such as static friction, are independent of gravity anyway.

Do they imitate low gravity in some way? I suppose that could play a role when trying to free Spirit…
