Occupy Central: A Hong Kong Protest Evolved From Planned Sit-In To Leaderless Umbrella Movement

The eye-catching Occupy movement in Hong Kong has been winding down since Oct. 6. Students are going to have a dialogue with the government on Friday. There is still debate in town on whether protesters should retreat completely. As the decision should be resting on the existing participants, an Australian media ran a story today about “Hong Kong Chief Executive CY Leung faces questions over secret $7m payout from Australian firm” amid noises that asked Leung to step down.

It is a known fact that Leung is not well-liked by the city’s people. Protests and demonstrations are the normal scenes of Hong Kong in these few years. Given its fading economic values in the world after the reunification in 1997, the overwhelming coverage of the Occupy movement by Western media surprised many. And Chinese analyses reckoned that the Leung government’s misstep of shooting tear gas to disperse students on Sept. 28 is the main reason of drawing attention.
