On this day in Weather History... In 2010, afternoon thunderstorms developed and moved northeast across Red Willow County in southwest Nebraska. An apparent microburst at McCook, Nebraska, resulted in a small area of damage. A peak wind gust of 59 mph occurred at the airport, but damage in town occurred from an estimated 80 mph wind gust. A 6000 square foot section of roof was torn from the local lumber yard and the sheet metal wrapped around and damaged several vehicles, causing severe body and tire damage. A nearby car dealership also sustained damage and winds were strong enough to topple a light pole.
