CHINA - Residents in the city of Yulin slaughter thousands of dogs at their annual summer solstice festival. Animal rights activists buy dozens of dogs before they are EATEN at controversial Chinese festival!

This year, organisers tried to avoid protests by holding their feasts early to avoid attention.

Dogs are caged alive and then bought by those taking part in the festival.

However, protesters, who have been attempting to stop the event, decided to buy up as many dogs as they could afford in a bid to stop them being killed.

Under the local tradition, eating dog and lychee and drinking liquor on the solstice is supposed to make people stay healthy during winter.

State media carried photos showing residents of Yulin gathering last weekend to celebrate the longest day of the year - ahead of the actual solstice - tucking into plates of meat and vegetables around dining tables strewn with lychees.

Reports said they wanted to avoid protests by animal rights activists.
