The Kenya Railways Corporation Board of Directors’ Chairman, Gen. (Rtd) Jeremiah Kianga has announced the appointment of Mr. Atanas K.  Maina as the new Managing Director following the approval of the Board’s recommendations by the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Transport & Infrastructure in accordance with Section 5(1) of the Kenya Railways Corporation Act Cap 397. 
The position was advertised on 8th August 2013.  Mr. Maina emerged the best candidate out of the eleven shortlisted from a list of over 100 applicants.
Mr. Maina succeeds Mr. Nduva Muli who was appointed to the position of Principal Secretary for Transport in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure last year. 
Until his appointment, Mr. Maina was the General Counsel and Group Company Secretary at UAP Holdings Limited. He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a Certified Public Secretary.  
The new Managing Director, previously worked with KRC as Corporation Secretary and Head of Legal Services for seven (7) years. He was involved in the restructuring of the Kenya Railways between 2004 and 2011. Mr Maina, brings more than 20 years experience in corporate and commercial law, corporate governance, management  and administration, capital restructuring, mergers & acquisitions and, transport and logistics to the Corporation. 
In his new role, the incoming Managing Director will oversee the execution of the current strategic plan which sets out to construct the Standard Gauge Railway line from Mombasa to Malaba with a branch line to Kisumu and develop the commuter rail transport system in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu and managing the concession in order to boost rail transport services in Kenya.
