STOP the mass killing of #romanian dogs !! On 25 September 2013, the Constitutional Court of Romania authorised the mass killing of Romania’s stray dogs. Under this new law, stray and roaming dogs are to be rounded up en masse (we estimate that Romania has an estimated 500,000-600,000) and detained in shelters, causing severe overcrowding and associated problems of hygiene, stress and fighting amongst the anxious dogs. If the dogs are not claimed or adopted within this too short window of hope, they will be killed. If this ruling goes ahead, tens of thousands of dogs will lose their lives over the coming weeks and months. History shows us that the mass killing of dogs is not the solution to managing a nation’s dog population. Romania tried it in 2001, killing tens of thousands of dogs, and just over a decade on and it has a vast stray dog population again. The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is calling on the Romanian Government to think again and to enter into dialogue with WSPA and other animal welfare organisations on how to manage its stray and roaming dog population in proven ways that are both effective and humane. The stray and roaming dogs of Romania need the people of the UK to protect them from the threat to their lives that hangs over them because of this new law.
