The Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. Training the next generation of journalists to shape the future of news.

#MerrillUMD Journalist Emily Schweich has been interning @WUSA9 this summer and sent us us this great report:

Since July, I have been interning at WUSA9, Washington D.C.’s CBS affiliate, and I was asked to share my internship experience with the Merrill community. I've had the opportunity to explore many aspects of broadcast and online news production by shadowing reporters and photographers, writing stories and creating photo galleries for the web, logging raw tape, writing voiceovers and researching stories.

One of my favorite internship experiences is following news stories from conception to completion. By sitting in on morning meetings, going out on shoots and watching the final project, I've learned a lot about the process of seeking information and generating news.

Experience is the best teacher, and I’m so honored to be able to gain real-world experience at a station in a top 10 market. My internship has taught me that the broadcast news industry isn't always an easy one in which to work, but that it can be rewarding.
