From a Press Release:
In the early morning hours of August 3rd 2013 I, Chief of Police Tom Best was notified by the Livingston County Coroner's Office of a traffic crash which occured of Route 47 near Route 116. I was further advised that Probationary Coal City Police Officer Heather Katherine Wandt currently of Oswego Illinois was involved in the crash. I am profoundly saddened to report that Officer Wandt did not survive and was pronounced as deceased on scene. Heather was 30 years of age and was appointed as a Police Officer for the village on July 8, 2013. Heather was currently attending the Police Training Institue in Champaign and was looking forward to returning to serve the residents of the Village of Coal City. I, along with the members of the department, village officials and employees are deeply affected by this loss. I ask that everyone please think of Heather's friends and family at this difficult time. The accident is still under investigation by the Illinois State Police and the Livingston County Coroner's Office. Information on the time and location of services will be announced by the family when they are determined.
