#Nature Awareness 5/14/2013 - Firefly. The firefly is in a family of insects that is classified within the beetle order Coleoptera. They are, in fact, winged beetles and hold many of the same totemic associations are their other beetle peers. Of course, the firefly does stand on rare ground however in its ability to light up the night. It stands apart because of its inner workings. Fireflies, sometimes also called lightning bugs, typically use their cold light - a bioluminescence - to attract mates or prey. As children, many of us were probably attracted, too, and couldn't help but to try and catch them. Symbolism: hope, life, attraction, light in the darkness, creativity, spiritual inspirations.
