Carved black basalt female Cycladic Idol, Late Spedos Variety, with short legs, flattened feet, the stylized body with widely spaced breasts, the slender arms crossed, left over right, at the waist, the pubic area indicated by a grooved triangle. The significance of Cycladic Idols is still under debate. A vast majority were found in tombs and graves, which might suggest that they played similar roles to the Egyptian Ushabtis – Guardians of the Afterlife. However, stylistically they display characteristics of a fertility figure. 2400 BC (6" x 3"). http://sadighgallery.us
