Jihiwa's ruby under green laser light
(Color-corrected image)

Exposing a ruby to a green laser beam causes it to glow red; the chromium that colors the stone absorbs the energy, and re-emits it as red light.

Lasers tend to wreck havoc with digital cameras -- so in this image, I color-corrected the stone to be much closer to what the human eye sees.
