OBJECT O/T WEEK Thomas Tchopzan, Relief panel, paint on wood. Thomas Tchopzan is a member of the Cameroonian Bamileke people, who are renowned for the quality of their sculpture. He carves large-scale relief panels and he has specialized in banknotes, carving very precise copies of the notes in wood. Tchopzan (originally a furniture-maker) paints his notes, thereby turning them into relief paintings. He does not confine himself to Cameroonian currency – dollar bills and sterling and yen notes also qualify. This is therefore not just an expression of national consciousness, but also an artistic appropriation of objects from everyday life, an African version of Pop Art.
