What to Expect From the American Music Awards 2012 - The fans determine who wins big at Sunday evening’s American Music Awards, meaning it’s bound to be a big night for teen pop. But there will be more somber moments during the live broadcast as well, as Ryan Seacrest and Stevie Wonder have planned a tribute to the late Dick Clark, who created the event 40 years ago. Wondering what’s in store for the big night? Here’s the rundown.
The AMAs haven’t had an official host for a few years now. Jimmy Kimmel took the reins for four consecutive years in the aughts, but since 2009 it’s been running on a celebrity introduction format. This year’s presenters include Pretty Little Liars stars Ashley Benson and Lucy Hale, the Backstreet Boys, Eric Stonestreet, Gavin DeGraw, Paula Abdul, and Stacy Keibler.
The American Music Awards is practically a fancy music festival, thanks to its incredible lineup of live performers. This year the crowd will go wild for Justin Bieber (if he’s recovered from his breakup, that is), Kelly Clarkson, Carly Rae Jepsen, PSY, The Wanted, Swizz Beats feat. Chris Brown and Ludacris, Christina Aguilera, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, No Doubt, Linkin Park, Pink, Pitbull, and Usher. We’re particularly excited for Ke$ha’s performance — maybe she’ll even whip out that headdress she made made out of human teeth.
The AMAs are basically a popularity contest, as the awards are fan-determined. No one will be surprised if Justin Bieber takes home Artist of the Year, although he faces stiff competition from Drake, Maroon 5, Rihanna, and Katy Perry. He may also scoop awards for Favorite Male Artist and Favorite Album in the pop/rock genre. But Rihanna and Nicki Minaj are tied for the most nominations this year, although you shouldn’t expect to see RiRi at the show — she’s a little busy with her “777″ tour this week. Among her nominations was a nod for Favorite Album, Soul/R&B, for which she’s up against her maybe flame, Chris Brown. See the full list of nominees here.
