Iran slams Bahrain for revoking citizenship of activists
Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has condemned Bahraini regime for its decision to revoke the citizenship of 31 opposition activists.
“Unfortunately, the Bahraini government has been following a security approach to deal with peaceful popular protests over the past months,” Mehmanparast said on Wednesday.
He stressed that Bahrain’s crackdown on anti-regime protests would not solve the problems in the country and has only caused further complications in the tiny Persian Gulf island nation.
The Bahraini regime revoked the citizenship of the activists, accusing them of being threats to state security.
Two brothers, Jawad and Jalal Fairuz, who were former members of Bahrain’s parliament representing the country’s main opposition group, al-Wefaq, were among the individuals whose citizenships were revoked.
The move comes after Bahrain late last month banned all protests and gatherings across the country.
The Bahraini revolution began in mid-February 2011, when the people, inspired by the popular revolutions that toppled the dictators of Tunisia and Egypt, started holding massive demonstrations.
The Bahraini government promptly launched a brutal crackdown on the peaceful protests and called in Saudi-led Arab forces from neighboring Persian Gulf states.
Dozens of people have been killed, and thousands injured and jailed, since the beginning of the uprising.
The protesters say they will continue holding anti-regime demonstrations until their demand for the establishment of a democratically elected government is met.
