Malala Yousafzai, the 14-yr old girl who campaigned for girls' rights to an education in Pakistan, was shot in the head on Tuesday, October 9th on her way home from school in Mingora, the main town in the Swat Valley, Pakistan. The Pakistani Taliban took responsibility for her attack. She was transferred on October 15th to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, UK where she will be treated with specialized care that's not available in Pakistan. This facility has the world's largest single-floor critical care unit. According to an article in the New York Times today, Malala can stand and is showing progress, but she has suffered brain damage and for now cannot speak.
