KIM SOO HYUN's Movie "The Thieves" steals box office from American superhero
Korean blockbuster "The Thieves" has stolen the No. 1 spot from Hollywood action pic "Dark Knight Rises."
The data compiled by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) showed on Monday that the star-studded action comedy played well over the weekend and landed at the top of the domestic box office with over two million tickets sold.
Starring top Korean actors Jun Ji-hyun, Kim Yoon-seok, Kim Hye-soo, Lee Jung-jae and Kim Soo-hyun, "The Thieves" tells the story about a group of ten thieves from different backgrounds who have teamed up to steal a diamond hidden inside a casino located in Macao.
With director Choi Dong-hoon wielding the megaphone, “The Thieves” made its premiere on July 25 and recorded the second biggest opening in Korean film history after Bong Joon-ho's 2006 smashing hit "The Host."
Slipping down to second place was Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway's "Dark Knight Rises," which sold 891,058 admissions between July 27 and 29.
Fox's animated picture "Ice Age: Continental Drift" followed next, making a mild debut on the chart at No. 3 after attracting 359,140 moviegoers during the same period.
Korean thriller "Horror Stories" was also another new entry at the box office this weekend. The omnibus flick stood at No. 4 with 91,894 tickets sold and former No. 1 "Deranged" ranked at the fifth place with 75,902 admits.
Other feature films in the top ten are "Detective Conan Movie 16 - The Eleventh Striker," "Doraemon: Nobita and the Island of Miracles ~Animal Adventure~," "The Amazing Spider-Man," "Midnight in Paris" and "SEOTAIJI RECORD OF THE 8TH."
