The 60th anniversary of The Queen's Accession: Diamond Jubilee

Diamond Jubilee year is now well and truly underway as The Queen marked the anniversary of her Accession to the throne. And To mark the 60th anniversary of the Accession, Buckingham Palace released the official Diamond Jubilee portraits of The Queen taken by photographer John Swannell in the Centre Room at Buckingham Palace in December 2012.

The Accession
On Wednesday, 6 February 1952, Princess Elizabeth received the news of her father King George VI's death and her own accession to the throne, while staying in a remote part of Kenya.

The tour had to be abandoned, and the young Princess flew back to Britain as Queen. She was greeted by Prime Minister Winston Churchill and other officials at the airport.
