Britain Continues Torture of Irish Women 40 Years Later

The Irish Government on behalf of the men who had been subject to the five methods took a case to the European Commission on Human Rights (Ireland v. United Kingdom, 1976 Y.B. Eur. Conv. on Hum. Rts. 512, 748, 788-94 (Eur. Comm’n of Hum. Rts.)). The Commission stated that it

considered the combined use of the five methods to amount to torture, on the grounds that (1) the intensity of the stress caused by techniques creating sensory deprivation "directly affects the personality physically and mentally"; and (2) "the systematic application of the techniques for the purpose of inducing a person to give information shows a clear resemblance to those methods of systematic torture which have been known over the ages..a modern system of torture falling into the same category as those systems.applied in previous times as a means of obtaining information and confessions.

18 October 2011 – A United Nations expert on torture, Special Rapporteur Juan Méndez said “Considering the severe mental pain or suffering solitary confinement may cause, it can amount to torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.... “Segregation, isolation, separation, cellular, lockdown, Supermax, the hole, Secure Housing Unit… whatever the name, solitary confinement should be banned... Indefinite and prolonged solitary confinement in excess of 15 days should also be subject to an absolute prohibition, he added, citing scientific studies that have established that some lasting mental damage is caused after a few days of social isolation.... Social isolation is one of the harmful elements of solitary confinement and its main objective. It reduces meaningful social contact to an absolute minimum,” Mr. Méndez told the committee, noting that a significant number of individuals will experience serious health problems regardless of specific conditions of time, place, and pre-existing personal factors.

Marian Price who has been politically interned in Occupied Ireland for 8 months now, by an un-elected Englishman, was previously force fed 400 times on 200 days of hunger strike. She has been in solitary confinement for all of that time and as a direct result of her treatment by the British previously is in serious pain and agony. Now with solitary confinement and isolation her pain has been compounded with this form of mental and emotional torture.

First they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the Palestinians,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Palestinian.
Then they came for Marian Price,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't Irish.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me...
