#9 on my list of THE 25 GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME: Hole "Live Through This" (1994). Hole's 2nd album was released by Geffen on April 12, 1994, just four days after frontwoman Courtney Love's husband, Kurt Cobain, was found dead in their home (leading Love to quip, "I'm not psychic, but my lyrics are."). For anyone seeking music that does more than amuse or entertain or have a great beat, the songs on "Live Through This" provide a scathing diversion. The record is a rough-hewn, pain-filled, singular experience (which may be one reason the band went a glossier route with 1998's "Celebrity Skin"). Love and guitarist Eric Erlandson have fashioned a truly striking musical achievement here, easily the equal of Nirvana's efforts (though '90s purists will argue the fact). Love may not get the recognition she so richly deserves because she's a woman in a man's business, but she rocks as hard in the studio as any female or male has--before or since. More importantly, her reckless celeb persona never overshadows what you're hearing. She's the heart of the album--you believe what she's telling you--and never once does the grit and gravy feel put on.
