Soldier from Maine killed in Afghanistan The Associated Press AUGUSTA Maine — Officials say a soldier from Maine has been killed in Afghanistan. Gov. John Baldacci said Tuesday that 20-year-old Spc. Andrew Hutchins was killed Monday. He said Hutchins was a military policeman serving with the 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell Ky. According to Pete Rogers of the state Department of Defense Veterans and Emergency Management Hutchins' hometown of record is New Portland. He said Hutchins and his wife were expecting their first child. The governor said Hutchins' father lives in Leeds and his mother lives in Waltham. Hutchins' father told the governor that his son had been wounded earlier but wanted to return to Afghanistan to be with his fellow soldiers. Hundreds attend Maine soldier’s funeral The Associated Press AUGUSTA Maine — Hundreds of family and friends have paid their respects to a 20-year-old soldier from Maine who was killed in Afghanistan. According to the Morning Sentinel about 350 people attended Friday’s funeral for Cpl. Andrew Hutchins who was killed Nov. 8 in the Khost Province in eastern Afghanistan near Pakistan. During the service at the Augusta Armory Col. Valmore Vigue called Hutchins a great young man and a great soldier. Hutchins was from New Portland and a 2008 graduate of Carrabec High School in North Anson. Gov. John Baldacci ordered U.S. and Maine flags flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in Hutchins’ honor. Operation Enduring Freedom
