In America, there are more students studying visual and performing arts than engineering.

It's not about brightness. It's about laziness. Engineering requires too much dedication.
The problem with these numbers is that an engineer can take a few classes or auditions and become an actor, but it doesn't work so quickly in reverse
I don't think it has anything to do with intelligence. The arts are equally challenging and foster creative thinking that applies to all fields.
I think American students are smart/bright. they need some guidance to select the right field.
Face it: most American students aren't smart enough to handle engineering courses.
