The old adage "take time to stop & smell the flowers" may not apply in this case—This bizarre plant emits an odor similar to rotting flesh!

The plant that produces this amazing flower is called Dutchman’s pipes (Aristolochia elegans), and it's blooming now in our Upland Tropical Rainforest exhibit. Look for them just above the Golden Lion Tamarin enclosure.

This unique genus has more than 350 species of herbs and herbaceous climbers. They are found worldwide but are native to Brazil.

They produce an amazing flower which has the modeled appearance of flesh, and emits a foul (rotting flesh) odor which its pollinators find irresistible. Primarily pollinated by flies and some bee species these animals enter the throat of the flower. Once inside tiny hairs snap into action preventing the pollinators from being able to leave. As the flies thrash about in an attempt to escape they pollinate the flower.

Once pollination has taken place the hairs relax and the animals are free to leave unharmed to pollinate the next flower.
