of Upland Ind.; assigned to the 5th Squadron 7th Cavalry Regiment 1st Brigade Combat Team 3rd Infantry Division Fort Stewart Ga.; Died April 27 in Fallujah Iraq of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. Also killed was Army Spc. Eddie D. Tamez. Explosion kills soldier from Grant County The Associated Press MARION Ind. — A soldier from Grant County has been killed in Iraq a family member said. Army Pfc. David Austin Kirkpatrick of Matthews was killed April 27 said his sister Carrie Kirkpatrick. Matthews is about 55 miles northeast of Indianapolis. Military officials told her parents that Kirkpatrick was in a Humvee when it was damaged by an improvised explosive device she said. She did not know the exact location. Her 20-year-old brother was a 2006 Eastbrook High School graduate. Carrie Kirkpatrick said there was no definite date for her brother’s remains to be returned home. “They told us that seven to 10 days from now he would be back” she said. Funeral arrangements for Kirkpatrick were being handled by Jones-Smith Funeral Home in Upland. In all 80 people from Indiana have Died after being sent to the Middle East since the buildup for the invasion of Iraq began in 2003. Operation Iraqi Freedom
