Tens of thousands of wires snake through every commercial airplane. Boeing's Electrical Systems Responsibility Center in Everett, Wash., spin those wires into bundles.

After the bundles are used, the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) spools would get thrown out because there isn't suitable technology to recycle them. Boeing and its wire supplier worked to reuse empty wire spools, eliminating more than 12,000 pounds (5443 kg) from Boeing's solid waste stream per year.
