As fighting continues in Ivory Coast thousands of refugees are streaming into Liberia each day. Overall, the refugee numbers are now one-fifth of Grand Gedeh’s population. Two-thirds of those crossing are women and children, many fleeing violence and attacks on their homes and communities.

Plan has started registering children and identifying Liberian as well as Ivorian teachers so that schools can open again shortly. Learning materials and school books in Frecch will be supplied as soon as permission has been granted by the UN and local authorities. Plan will be focusing on children’s rights and education, by establishing Child Rights Clubs, Parent Teacher Associations, and Early Childhood Care and Development Management Committees.
