Edge Death: Apr 14, 2005 of Virginia Beach Va.; assigned to 1st Battalion 5th Marine Regiment 1st Marine Division I Marine Expeditionary Force Camp Pendleton Calif.; attached to 2nd Marine Division II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward); killed April 14 by enemy small-arms fire while conducting combat operations in Ramadi Iraq. VMI graduate killed in Iraq Associated Press VIRGINIA BEACH Va. — Marine Capt. James C. Edge a Virginia Military Institute graduate was killed by enemy fire in Ramadi Iraq the Department of Defense reported Monday. Edge31 a Virginia Beach native was killed Thursday while conducting combat operations the Pentagon said. Edge was assigned to the 1st Battalion 5th Marine Regiment 1st Marine Division I Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Pendleton Calif. During Operation Iraq Freedom Edge was attached to the 2nd Marine Division II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). Edge was a 1996 graduate of VMI where he earned a bachelor’s degree in international studies according to VMI’s Web site. He also was a cadre corporal as a 3rd classman; a sergeant as a 2nd classman; and executive officer of Alpha Company as a 1st classman. He was also a member of the Rat Disciplinary Committee. “He loved VMI and he loved the Marine Corps” VMI classmate Robert J. Singley Jr. told the Daily Press of Newport News. “He was passionate about life.” His mother Janice Whorton of Norfolk declined to comment. Edge joined the Marine Corps in April of 1993 and has won the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal Combat Action Ribbon National Defense Service Medal Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. Singley said Edge was disciplined and focused but also liked to have fun. “I can’t think of anybody who better embo Died the VMI spirit” he said. According to VMI Edge is survived by his wife Krissy and two daughters Helena and Rachel of San Clemente Calif. He also leaves his father James Edge of Knotts Island N.C. Operation Iraqi Freedom
