Hehehe..yes we do call it a "lift"! Short but sweet. LOL
waiyin23 on May 4, 2009
In dutch they also call it a lift. In cantonese they translated it into chinese, so we say 'leeb'...
EddLC on May 4, 2009
Hey Greg! Remember to give me a visit! Yeh I'm English
happentobeshort on May 4, 2009

Brainlock72 on May 3, 2009
if you've got too much on you, I'll hold your wallet while you're in the "lift" Grunny! ;) (Guess who bought dinner!)
kixkikker on May 3, 2009
Colonials, what do they know. It's not called the English language for nothing :) Just be thankful it didn't smell of piss!
GeordieKat on May 3, 2009
@charlie1218 I doubt 9 people would fit so that won't be an issue!
kzap333 on May 3, 2009
@blackmamba1 does lift is just another word for elevate (and a shorter one), the fact is both names are wrong as it does not just elevate or lift you it takes you down as well :)
prounie on May 3, 2009
interesting! since Im neither from US n UK but still I understand both. I guess it's a matter of culture
andobrien on May 3, 2009
@lilydaawesome it used to be pounds sterling, sterlings being small silver coins, so a pound was a pound of small silver coins. now you know.
alexp44 on May 3, 2009
Dunno why this is confusing all you Americans - it's a lift. lol @ dcefrance - you actually make me choke laughing!
andobrien on May 3, 2009
my favorite lift company is Schindler's Lifts. Sounds like a bad pun but they predate the movie and WWII.
dcefrance on May 3, 2009
An average of 150 lbs per person? Obviously NOT American. ;-)
A5J4DX on May 3, 2009
the right word is life muahahahaha dont mock us uk peepz :P
kzap333 on May 3, 2009
Of course it's a lift what do you USAions call it? Do you say elevator every time?
PeteMP1992 on May 3, 2009
A lift and what do the Australians call it "a fall" ?
mandy_88 on May 3, 2009
And an apartment is called a Flat.
JamesStark on May 3, 2009
Both the language for 'persons' and the use of pounds are archaic. The sign looks like it's at least as old as the late 80s. Nobody says 'persons' now unless they're pretentious managerial types.
kethni on May 3, 2009
Younger peeps use metric system older peeps use Imperial.
onebreath on May 3, 2009
We also call a flashlight a torch. :)
wildfire198 on May 3, 2009
We like to multi-task - pre 80's (I think) measurements were taught in lbs, now it's kgs. Surprised it wasn't an OTIS lift, like you guys have over the pond...having fun over here Grunny?
bisfitty on May 3, 2009
Whys it say lbs? dont they weigh shit in Kg?
iheartjoan on May 3, 2009
