Nicknamed “Kill Calvary” because of the unusually high casualty rate among his men, cavalry commander Hugh Judson Kilpatrick was also one the most notorious scoundrels of the Union Army, he lied, thieved, and whored his way through the Civil War, yet in the end managed to attain the stars of a major general. It may be quite possible that the death of his young wife, ( who died in labor) he also lost another young child during the war, destroyed any sense of restraints available to him. CNN newsman Anderson Cooper, is Kilpatrick's great-great-grandson.
