Gen. John Sedgwick, affectionately known as Uncle John, was killed by a snipers bullet at Spotsylvania while directing the emplacement of artillery before the battle on May 10, 1864. Just as he was reassuring his front-line troops that Confederate sharpshooters “ couldn’t hit an elephant at this distance,” a bullet slammed into Sedgwick’s face below his left eye.
