Zambia, 2009: Mirriam holds her infant son, Peter, in the rural Mansa District. Mirriam is HIV-positive but Peter is not, thanks to a programme to prevent mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of the disease. Zambia has made great strides in expanding PMTCT services, which are now available in 70 per cent of health facilities. By 2009, antiretroviral drugs, an important part of PMTCT, were administered to about half of HIV-positive children and some 57 per cent of HIV-positive women.
