India, 2009: A boy with severe acute malnutrition sits in his mother’s lap, in Bihar State. India is home to a quarter of the world’s hungry people, a situation made more acute by the global economic crisis. Malnutrition now afflicts 43 per cent of children under five, and is especially prevalent in rural areas and among the urban poor. Targeted efforts to improve health are beginning to redress these inequities.
