Abebu Shimelis, a 25-year-old who looks twice her age, has five children aged seven months to 10 years. Like over 90 percent of women in the countryside, she delivered them all at home.

“We really don’t have anything to eat,” Abebu says. “At night my children cry a lot and go to sleep early to avoid more hunger pain.”

Like Fatuma’s family, Abebu’s family eats only Injera. On a lucky day they might split a tomato.
