so I'm puzzled: why is the meteorite just there on a nice flat surface? shouldn't it be in a hole/crater? Or has it been there so long, the terrain above and around it has eroded/shifted away?

It is metalic looking. It is part of a crashed alien space craft. Underneath it you will find strange symbols & a part number.

Ya. Most Meteorites are Metallic, Heavy in Iron with a small percent of Nickel most often.
