The white peninsula that you see at the east of the strait are actually greenhouses. That is, a man-made structure visible from space, remember that the Great Wall not so easily seen.

@Geshiela The present condition is about 5.3 million years old, before the Mediterranean had been a dry salt lake. Opening and closing have repeated frequently during the geological past.

@Geshiela The strait will close again in a couple of million years and the complete Mediterranean would be evaporated within approx. 1000 years only.
