pretty much you will prob' need to reinstall. But if you have an external drive enclosure you can probably get to any files not backed up. But you would never NOT back up right? There just appears to be not boot volume. Drive might be fine just no files t

Reboot holding down option to choose adrive do that a time or 2 its fixed. Bassicly it thinks it dosnt have a drive to boot to.

...m on it. This does not mean it can't be fixed, but you may have anything from a corrupted file to a virus. This might be from Microsoft stuff if you're using Boot Camp.

Maybe try cmd+v for verbose. That might help diagnose what the issue is. From what I know, the grey screen you are seeing pretty much means that your Mac cannot find a startup drive, which by the sound of it, may mean that your drive has some major proble

This usually means the system could not load boot.efi, or some other issue. Did you try restarting and holding down the "Alt" key? Happened to me once, had to hard reset and it came back to life within 30 seconds.

BootROM issue? If it's a PPC Mac, the hard drive partition may be in GUID scheme.

Last time that happened, It was on mac OS 9 and meant that the startup disk was corrupted.

Try booting off the DVD and see if the HD is there. That happened to my cousin and it was that the HD was completely shot. Hope it's not the case with yours.
